Crossing the Mackinac Bridge is an experience! There is a toll to pay based on the number of axles on your vehicle; the RV was $5 per axle and our tow vehicle was $2 per axle for a total of $14. We were within the weight limit so we did not have to get any special privileges to cross. Trucks (which we generally follow the rules for those on the freeway) were asked to stay in the right lane. The max speed limit is 45 mph for passenger vehicles and 25 mph for trucks weighing over 60,000 lbs. We weigh in at about 41,200 lbs. so we split the difference and called it good!
When the Mackinac Bridge was completed, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world, a title it held for over a decade. Stretching nearly 5 miles from end to end, the bridge's two towers rise 552 feet above the water, making them among the tallest structures of their kind in the United States.
Sun Outdoors in Petoskey, MI was our home 8 days. We stayed at a Sun Outdoors in California and knew they were very nice RV resorts. Bonus for me, they have recycling on site - my dream! Who knew how much I would miss curbside recycling?
Petoskey, MI has a very active downtown area. It has an old time feel to it, yet it is vibrant at the same time.
One evening was spent next door to our RV resort at Gypsy Distillery.
The property was previously an equestrian center that has been converted to the distillery and event center. It has a very cool vibe and we love their logo.
There are two on-site food establishments; it almost felt like ordering at a food truck, but it was inside.
We found another lighthouse, this time on Lake Michigan. The water temperature is warmer than Lake Superior. People were diving off the pier and enjoying the water. According to Google, Lake Michigan water temperature this time of year is around 68-70 degrees.
Just to the southwest of us was another cute harbor town of Charlevoix. We went for brunch one Sunday and strolled around the downtown area and admired the boats.
