Wheelin' in southern Utah

While we were staying near Hurricane, UT, we ventured out to some trails. We stopped by a local 4x4 shop to get some advice on where to go and headed to the West Rim Trail near Sand Mountain. The local shop said it was probably rated a 6. Up to this point we had driven on trails that were rated 3-4 or a moderate level of difficulty. We knew we had the height clearance to take on some more beefy rock climbing and were up to the challenge!

After making our way off the West Rim Trail with the help from a couple young guys in their side-by-side, we got some rough directions on how to get over to the Sand Hollow sand dunes. That was an adventure! The sun shining on the red sand made it almost impossible to see any tracks. We tooled around a while and could see something up ahead that was a pinnacle of sorts. It is the "top of the world"...an oft referenced place from one of our favorite YouTube channels, Matt's Off Road Recovery. And while we were on the top of the world, we saw their crew recovering someone! It was awesome. We took the opportunity to follow their lead out of the sand dune area and get back to the trailhead.

A few days later we were over in Moab and connected up with a group ride. It was our first time riding with a group, and it was a great experience. What a difference it makes when you have someone leading you that has been on this trail multiple times. There are a list of trails that those in the Jeep community can earn a Badge of Honor for completing, and we did our first one, called Fins and Things. Our lead driver, Alex, was super helpful and gave great tips on tackling the obstacles.

It may be a while until we can wheel again. The western states definitely have more in the way of trails...the next leg of our journey will be bringing us back to the Midwest. We are looking forward to catching up with our extended family this summer and hope to connect with many of you!
