❄️ Adding a Third A/C — The Furrion Chill Cube

We’ve had two rooftop air conditioners since day one. And while they’ve done the job, we’ve always wished for better airflow up front — especially on hot days. The front of the rig just didn’t cool down like the back did. So we decided to add a third A/C.

But not just any A/C — we went with the Furrion Chill Cube. It’s got a variable-speed compressor (think mini split technology) and uses way less power than the factory units. That makes a big difference, especially now that we’ve upgraded our electric system.

The Install

We knew exactly where we wanted to put it — right in the middle where there was already a vent fan. That location worked out perfectly. No extra cuts, no weird fit issues. Just needed to figure out how to get power to it.

Our son Carter gave us a hand getting the unit up onto the roof. Thank god, It’s not a small unit and weighs in at about 80lbs.  It was touch and go for about 5 mins getting it up on the roof.  But once it was up there, the swap was pretty straightforward. Just a bit of wiring, set the unit down where the old vent fan was removed, tightened some long bolts and it sealed things up.

Big Difference Right Away

This unit is quiet, smooth, and efficient. Honestly, it almost does the work of the other two A/Cs combined.

On an 80+ degree day, we can run just the Furrion and stay totally comfortable. The other two don’t even kick on. And when they do, they don’t need to work as hard. We’re cooling more space, using less energy, and things just feel better balanced now.

Now while Ann is in her studio recording we are able to run the Furrion and keep the rig cool and quiet while she records her next book.  Visit https://www.annfritzvocals.com to keep up with what she has been up to.

Works Off-Grid Too

In a previous post, we mentioned that our A/Cs couldn’t run while off-grid — they just drew too much power. But the Furrion’s lower power draw changes everything.

With our 920Ah lithium battery bank and the Victron system managing it, we can now run this A/C while unplugged. And not just for a few minutes — we can run it for a good chunk of the day, especially if the sun’s helping out through the solar panels.

That opens up a lot of options. We can park in the middle of nowhere and still cool down in the heat. Huge win. (For when we try this out. LOL)

Final Thoughts

This was a pretty simple upgrade with a big payoff. It cools better, uses less power, and runs quieter than our factory units. If you’re looking to add or replace an A/C, we definitely recommend the Furrion Chill Cube — especially if you’re building toward off-grid capability.

We’ll post some automation tips soon too — we’ve already hooked it into Home Assistant for smarter cooling.
